Frequently asked questions

What is an IFSC code?

IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) is an 11-character code issued by the Reserve Bank of India that identifies a bank branch for NEFT, RTGS and IMPS transfers. The first four letters are the bank code, the fifth character is always 0, and the last six characters identify the branch.

Where can I find the IFSC code of my bank branch?

It is printed on your cheque leaf and passbook, and shown in your bank's net banking and mobile app. You can also search it on IFSC Tracker by bank, state, district and branch.

What is a MICR code?

MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) is a 9-digit code printed at the bottom of a cheque. The first three digits are the city, the next three the bank and the last three the branch.

Can I use the same IFSC for NEFT, RTGS, IMPS and UPI?

Yes. One IFSC works for every transfer type the branch supports. Each branch result on IFSC Tracker shows whether NEFT, RTGS, IMPS and UPI are supported.

What happens if I enter a wrong IFSC code?

If the code does not exist, the transfer is rejected. If it belongs to another branch of the same bank, most banks still credit the account using the account number, but always check the code before sending money.

Has the IFSC code changed after a bank merger?

Often yes. Branches of merged banks such as Vijaya Bank, Dena Bank, Syndicate Bank, Allahabad Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce and Andhra Bank received new IFSC codes. Search the branch here to see its current code.
